    Tea has been enjoyed for many thousands of years to help comfort and heal. Today tea based beverages are recognized as a valuable addition for us who seek out a plant-based diet. There are just so many health benefits you can get from a nice cup of tea, and it is just so easy, so it is the perfect choice for everyone who is trying to go on a vegetarian diet or anyone who is vegan or trying to go vegan.

    The main benefits from tea is that it is high in antioxidants, and antioxidants are essential for keeping us in good health. Antioxidants help to protect our cells from all the damage caused by free radicals. The best tea for this is of course is green tea, as it is so high in antioxidant content. Green tea is also rich in catechins which are a type of antioxidant that has been shown to have great anti-inflammatory properties. We also know that tea is a great source of hydration, so it is a great choice for everyone to stay hydrated ,which is so important if you are following a plant-based diet. Tea also contains no added sugars or other artificial ingredients, so it is important for everyone trying to keep a health wight .

    In the western world the big killer in many cases can come down to too much stress in our everyday lives. Tea has a great ability to reduce stress. Lots of varieties of  teas and herbal infusions like green tea and dreamy chamomile all contain compounds that have been proven to  have a calming  effect and it is easy to create new and exciting flavor combinations of teas and herbal infusions. This makes tea a great choice for those looking to add variety to their plant-based diet.

    Tea can even be used in cooking, so adding great flavors to lots of dishes. We can use tea as a  marinade for tofu, or it can be added to stews and soups to give amazing flavor. So basically there are so many ways to use tea into a plant-based diet , it is the secrete weapon of nature! 

    We should also remember that tea is usually produced by small, family-owned farms, and so is very often grown by using sustainable farming , so it is really good for the planet and it is really good for us. Therefore we can really feel sure to say that  tea is really good if you are on a plant-based diet or starting to experiment with a plant based diet.  The Vegan Food Village runs all day from 11 am till 6 pm so if you are vegan, veggie, curious about a plant based diet or even an Irish foodie, this might be the best place in Dublin this weekend and there should be plenty of free samples. We we will be partnering with sisters Mahya and Maryam all the way from Persia to show their Persian teas and Spices, these are amazing, the tastes are out of this world, you will just love them! The girls are publishing their new "Easy Persian" cookbook in time for Christmas so everyone can enjoy the fantastic flavours of Persiana, So Go On

SLEEPY TEA  does it work ? 

According to many studies most adults require between six and nine hours of sleep every night, so what if you just can’t get yourself to sleep at night? Well there are lots of reasons why it can be difficult to get to sleep at night , like depression , over work,  use of blue light devices like laptops just before bedtime and yes drinking too many drinks that contain caffeine during the evening.

Indeed caffeine is found in tea , coffee, chocolate, soft drinks and some medication. Yes it's true caffeine is great for giving us that energy boost we crave, usually when we are over worked. It is also true that some people are affected more by caffeine than others and can experience insomnia due to even moderate intakes in the late evening. Most medical sleep experts recommend that we don’t eat or drink anything containing caffeine in the four hours before bed, so what if you need a warm drink on a cold winters night ? would herbal tea i.e a nice cup of chamomile dreamy tea help ? yes we think so .

Can tea actually help you sleep?

Tea can be divided into several types , black, green, white, oolong ,Pu-erh and there is also herbal teas. We all know that great cup of Mrs Doyle's Irish tea is really good for us. All tea types contain antioxidant properties which will help to protect you from disease and will generally boost your energy levels. 

 

Herbal tea and the winter ? 

Basically herbal teas are not really tea in the technical sense as they do not come from the Camellia sinensis plant. However, herbal infusions are often refered to as tea because we brew them in the same way. The most popular herbal teas include chamomile, lavender, ginger, peppermint and rooibos. Herbal teas basically offer many of the same health benefits as traditional teas and are mostly caffeine-free, but can tea help you with your sleep?

Chamomile tea

The chamomile herb produces daisy-like flowers, and it has been brewed from the dried Chamomile flowers and used for centuries as one of the best natural treatment for insomnia. Chamomile infusion is naturally caffeine-free, so it is ideal for drinking at any time of day. We know that chamomile contains apigenin, a phytonutrient that has a sleep-inducing effect. Chamomile it seems also helps reduce stress and anxiety ! Our Mrs Doyle's Sleepy tea is a soothing mix of whole chamomile flower heads, lemon balm, valerian, and lavender and rose petals. Lemon balm, valerian and lavender have been used for centuries to treat ailments like insomnia and anxiety.   • Potential Anti-Cancer properties, Apigenin is not only useful for sleep but there are studies that show it may help fight off cancerous cells, helping to reduce cancer’s progression.

Are there other teas which can help you sleep…

Most sleep researchers recommend abstaining from eating or drinking anything containing caffeine during the 4 hours before bedtime. However if you still feel the need for a cup of  tea during the late afternoon or evening, go for a nice Pure Rooibos. Rooibos is a herb native to South Africa, Rooibos has a nutty, full-bodied taste and it is naturally caffeine-free. Of course decaffeinated tea is another option , Black Tea is treated with liquid carbon dioxide to remove caffeine. and this is a harmless process and does not diminish the flavour.  

So basically if you are having problems with sleep that have been going on for some time, go  see your doctor! otherwise have a good life style , eat well ,don't do caffeine 4 hours before bed time and don't do too much work 4 hours before bed time , try a Chamomile herbal tea in the evening and if you need a tea that is a little stronger try a Rooibos.  enjoy the fall and winter season , its time to take a rest and sleep a lot GO On be nice to your self and enjoy a nice  warm cup of tea or  a tasty herbal infusion.

There is a chill in the air and it is beginning to feel a little like winter so maybe it's time to put another log on the fire! Winter is all about keeping cozy, jumping up on the couch and watching fav movies  and getting some much needed relaxation time and indeed we all know that a nice cup of tea is the perfect cold weather brew.

 Tea is the perfect friend So Go on Go get cozy with one of your favorite teas and relax, forget fighting work, the traffic, and set up with one of your favorite teas. What are our picks for a cozy night at home? We love a nice cup of Earl Grey tea or an Irish cream tea and well if its really stormy outside lets have a bad weather tea blend.

Winter is also party season , so time for meeting up with friends and sure it's great too invite a few friends over for a few cups of a nice warm cupa and well tea and cakes, be nice to yourself ! and why not have a tea tasting competition to decide on your top winter tea .

 How to Host a Tea Tasting?

Well you will need a notebook for everyone, you will need pens or pencils, you can decide on the scale of marking, we suggest 1 -100 with 100 being perfection, after that you will need a set of matching cups, or even glasses and a cupple of nice big teapots to make those great tea brews! The next big question is what teas to put on your list? for best winter tea here our a few of our fav winter teas to start with :   Irish cream tea,  English afternoon tea ,  Earl grey blue flower and just to add a herbal tea to the competition we definitely would start with bad weather tea blend .

Anyway after a social afternoon of tea sampling its time to carve out some time for yourself with your happy tea. So if you are giving yourself a few moments respite with a nice hot mug of tea or just giving yourself some meditative time, tea will always give you the excuse to slow down, relax and enjoy the fall and winter season

 In Ireland Tea is enjoyed in greater volumes than alcohol! bet you did't know that! It seems the Irish are the largest tea drinkers per capita in the world, around four to six cups per day per person. 

If you are invited to an Irish house,  as soon as you cross the door you’ll be offered a cup of tea, so it's not just Mrs Doyle that is in love with a nice cup of tea!  Of course once you’ve finished that cup, you will be offered another, and so on and on and on!.

 

What's the History Of Irish Tea

The Irish tea culture dates back to the1800s. It was originally Imported from English merchants, Irish tea was mainly poorer quality so they added milk. Irish tea therefore had to be stronger than its English tea and thats the way it still is, strong and tasty. 

By the 1960s Ireland’s tea companies removed the middleman and started buying their tea straight from the growers.  Assam tea from India, is a very strong tea with a high tannin level, this is blended with the lighter-tasting Ceylon from Sri Lanka, giving an amazing tasty tea that is known as classic Irish Breakfast tea.

 

The Etiquette Around Tea In Ireland

In Ireland Tea is brewed in a teapot, though with younger people making tea in mugs is now more common. 

if you are in a rush then ok the Irish use tea bags, like everyone these days, and these are steeped one per cup of tea, and of course the tea after brewing for 3 to 5 minutes is complemented with a dash of milk to make a great Irish cup of tea. In the past a good cup of Irish tea always came with two spoons of sugar and fresh milk stirred in, it was better than dessert! but these days if you are counting the cals then to sweeten or not if left up to you and you might politely be asked "Are you sweet?"  which means,  do you want a spoon of sugar in the tea  .  

Here are some fun cultural rules surrounding Irish tea:

  • Having tea in a household—a house with out tea is in a minor crisis.
  • It is bad manors to make yourself a cup of tea without offering to make tea for everyone else in the house.  
  • And of course, to invite someone into your house and not immediately offer them tea is an absolute no no, after all offering a visitor a cup of tea is what Irish hospitality is all about.
  • Tea is indeed a social ritual that takes away the initial awkwardness of those first few minutes of a conversation. 

Irish tea, is not just a hot drink, it is an Irish custom that is a symbol of friendship, hospitality and camaraderie, and it is a great way to keep warm on a rainy day!

Best loose leaf teapot for Irish tea and Herbal teas

Loose leaf tea is a great choice for tea enthusiasts simply because of its quality, in terms of flavour and aroma as compared to tea bags which are fine if you are in a rush.

If you love your tea like Mrs Doyle then you need a great tea pot for a great cup of Irish tea. However with loose leaf tea, you will need a teapot designed just for loose leaf tea

It is well know that the material of the teapot can affect the taste of the tea. You can choose between Glass, ceramic, and porcelain teapots all of which are good options and will ensure that the taste of your tea is pure and unaffected by the teapot. Glass teapots are great fun as you can watch the tea steep and see the liquid change colours. Cast iron is another great option and they are very durable, but they are a little heavy. Plastic or aluminum teapots can change the taste of the tea so Mrs Doyle would definitely advise avoiding these. 

Infuser Basket or Strainer

It's important that teapots for loose leaf tea have a removable infuser basket that permits the tea leaves to expand and so release their full flavour. Infusers are great as the infuser basket can be easily removed once the tea has steeped, preventing over steeping and possible bitterness. Some teapots have a built-in strainer, it's best to look for a teapot with a nice fine mesh strainer as it will help catch even the smallest tea leaves.

Size

 If you only make a single cup, a nice small teapot may be sufficient, however, if you like to make lots of cups at once, it's  best to go for  a larger teapot . We should remember that a larger teapot will probably take longer to heat up and require more loose leaf tea.

Heat Retention

A good teapot should keep your tea warm for longer periods of time and ceramic and cast iron are great at retaining heat. Also check that the teapot has a good lid that fits tightly as some less expensive teapots are not made with a good fitting lid. Remember not all teapots can be put in the dishwasher and not all pieces in the teapot may be able to go inside the dishwasher.

What is Irish breakfast tea?

Well there is no standard formula , however, most Irish tea blends share common traits that makes them different from British tea blends. Traditionally the base of the Irish tea blend has always been a strong black Assam tea from India which is well known for its dark colour, strong flavour and slightly malty aroma. The Assam teas are usually blended with one other tea, basically a softer tea which brings out the different flavours and helps support the Assam tea. These secondary  teas are usually sourced from Kenya, and a popular choice is Kenyan Broken Pekoe.

 

The amazing taste of Irish tea 

The percentage of Assam tea to the ancillary leaves is what gives the Irish breakfast tea its amazing flavour. Irish tea is traditionally a strong cup of tea which comes from the processing of the leaves . Irish breakfast tea is usually made with leaves that have been broken and then lightly crushed . This is the process which permits the tea to steep faster and so release more flavour than an unbroken leaf.

The ingredient which turns tea leaves into an Earl Grey tea blend is the  addition of bergamot orange oil. Bergamot is a type of citrus fruit which comes from the Calabria region in Italy.
