This delightful and warming dessert is perfect for chilly winter days. These spiced apple and cinnamon puff pastry tarts are easy to make and pair wonderfully with a cup of tea.
Ingredients:
- 1 sheet of puff pastry (thawed if frozen)
- 2 medium-sized apples
- 2 tbsp granulated sugar
- 1 tbsp brown sugar
- 1 tsp ground cinnamon
- ½ tsp ground nutmeg
- ½ tsp ground ginger
- ¼ tsp ground cloves
- 1 tbsp lemon juice
- 1 egg (for egg wash)
- 1 tbsp water (to mix with the egg)
- Optional: powdered sugar for dusting
Instructions:
1. Prepare the Apples:
- Peel, core, and thinly slice the apples.
- Place the slices in a bowl and toss with lemon juice to prevent browning.
- Add the granulated sugar, brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, ginger, and cloves to the bowl. Mix well to coat the apples evenly with the spices.
2. Prepare the Puff Pastry:
- Preheat the oven to 200°C (400°F).
- Roll out the puff pastry on a lightly floured surface to smooth out any creases.
- Cut the pastry into rectangles or squares (approximately 4 inches by 4 inches).
3. Assemble the Tarts:
- Place the puff pastry pieces on a parchment-lined baking sheet.
- Lightly score a border around each piece (about 1 cm from the edge) without cutting all the way through.
- Arrange the apple slices inside the border, slightly overlapping them.
4. Egg Wash:
- In a small bowl, whisk together the egg and water.
- Brush the edges of the puff pastry with the egg wash to give them a golden finish when baked.
5. Bake:
- Place the tarts in the preheated oven and bake for 18-22 minutes, or until the puff pastry is golden and flaky.
6. Cool and Serve:
- Let the tarts cool for a few minutes.
- Dust with powdered sugar for a snowy winter touch if desired.
Serving Suggestion:
Serve warm with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or a dollop of whipped cream. Pair it with a hot cup of Mrs Doyle's tea for the ultimate winter treat!
